ComRes has Labour tied with the Tories

June 18th, 2011

Should Labour not be doing better?

The latest ComRes poll for the Indepedent on Sunday and Sunday Mirror is out, and has Labour 37% (-2), Conservative 37% (-1) and the Lib Dems on 11% again. Others are up to 15%.

Ed Miliband will be worried that his personal numbers are so poor – his figures have dropped 10-points in a month, according to Politics Home.

Ed Balls is little better thought of with only 10% preferring the pugilistic Shadow Chancellor – although 27% think David Miliband would be doing a better job than his brother. John Rentoul’s take is here

UPDATE from Mike Smithson

As several people have pointed out on the thread there is something not quite right with the poll.

This is the email I’ve just sent to the pollster:-

I can’t figure out the VI numbers in the latest poll.

The figures on page 17 of the dataset have CON 37: LAB 37: LD 11: BNP 9%: SNP 5%: GRN 4%: PC 4%: UKIP 4%: OTHERS 13%.

I make that a total of 124%.

I’d be grateful if you could clear this up ASAP.

Many thanks.

Morus

    another richard @295

I have a lot of these original War movies on DVD now, including the Dam Busters. You maybe right, but the script and director might surprise us all. Look at Band of Brothers as a great example of what can be produced now.

  • Tim B

    295 complete with renamed dog.

as of a decade ago, the grave was still there – I saw it.

Are they really remaking the Dam Busters – why?

They did a remake of Dr Zhivago and it was awful.

Rory McIroy! He’s most definitely the man, despite fact I’ve got sports coats older than him. Poise & control & great sportmanship in variety of ways. One moe day of that, and he’ll bring home the prize.

    “Be the ball.”

  • Tim B

301 – Look at Band of Brothers as a great example of what can be produced now.

Indeed – it is a beautiful series, very well produced. It actually improves on the (wonderful) book.

Networks like HBO are turning out some great stuff

    Tim B @302

They have remade a classic film noir, Mildred Pierce. I went back to watch the original, just not sure if Kate Winslet will pull it off when up against Joan Crawford?

  • http://liberaltaxi.blogspot.com/ corporeal

Al Pacino’s Scarface was actually a remake.

  • fitalass

    corporeal @306

    Now that I didn’t know.

    307. In honesty I found out from some judicious googling.

  • Tim B

303 – Rory McIroy! (sic) He’s most definitely the man, despite fact I’ve got sports coats older than him. Poise & control & great sportmanship (sic) in variety of ways. One moe (sic) day of that, and he’ll bring home the prize.

Remember Yang trailed by Tiger by 6 shots in 2009 in the final round and beat him. They will play together again tomorrow.

But yes, I think the Masters on Sunday was the searing of Rory, and he has learned from it and he is a prodigious talent, and this is his to lose, and he has the game and internal fortitude to withstand the challenge.

Like today, we’ll know how he is playing by his first non-par hole. If it’s a bogey, then we have a tournament – if it’s a birdie then it’s a win of historic proportions.

But to win this, wire to wire, is really, really something. there were “Let’s go Rory” cheers on every hole.

The crowd is with him, the country is with him – it doesn’t matter that he’s not American: this is potentially very very special.

This may well be the beginning of the post-Tiger world.

The good news is that Rory’s swing does not sacrifice his left knee.

    309. In your expert opinion Mr B is Tiger done? Nicklaus record which used to seem a matter of time will still stand?

On a side note, as far as I’m aware it’ll be the first time any country other than the US has had back to back winners at the US open for a very long time.

  • Tim B

305 – They have remade a classic film noir, Mildred Pierce.

They remade Double Indemnity too. It sucked.

It’s like State of Play and Edge Of Darkness – the movies never matched the TV series..

    - watching Rory’s presser now: he’s doing well

  • Sea Shanty Irish

With the Hot Hand of Ulster, what’s not to like? He’s younger than Lady Gaga fer Jaysus sake. And youth has definitely not only been on display, but had it’s day and then some. With plenty more to come, from Rory & others who are still getting carded when they buy a six-pack after the game.

Tim B, while watching the gold sure hope you’ve taken your doggie’s weather warnings to heed (she doesn’t like the low/high pressure gradients) and battened down your hatches, buttoned up you long-johns, etc, etc.

BTW in Seattle paper today, feature about tornado-mauled town of Phil Campbell, Alabama and aid received via the Phil Campbell Society including people of this name from Glasgow to Australia; president is Phil Campbell a professor from Brooklyn, they showed picture of another Phil Campbell from Nottingham helping clean up debris.

310 In your expert opinion Mr B is Tiger done? Nicklaus record which used to seem a matter of time will still stand?

On a side note, as far as I’m aware it’ll be the first time any country other than the US has had back to back winners at the US open for a very long time.

Last point first – a country smaller than Rhode Island has the chance to have 2 successive US Open winners. Much, Much, Much kudos to Ulster.

Is Tiger done? That’s a complex question, involving his body, his determination and his will.

He’s 35, he’s had 4 operations on his left knee, he’s had laser eye surgery twice, and won the US Open on effectively a broken leg after 19 holes of playoff.

We don’t know the true extent of Tiger’s injuries. Historically he’s very closed mouthed about it.

That knee is sub-optimal, and further invasive surgery is unlikely to do much good.

The fact he retired after 9 holes at the Players is a concern. More so is the fact that he couldn’t execute a simple chip shot that even I could do, involving no knee movement at all. This really shows his head isn’t where it needs to be. The fact he was obviously limping and trailing his fellow players is not a good sign.

Given his mental toughness, it is difficult to count him out. I think he will be back, but the dominant Tiger will never return. Will he win more Majors? Possibly. Will he get the magic figure of 19 to pass Jack? I suspect not.

He didn’t used to swear and get annoyed the way he does now. He never threw clubs like he does now.

But I could be wrong. I have watched him play at the Masters and the Tour Championship. His focus was incredible. That has all gone.

Tiger is 13 years older than Rory.

But Tiger is watching Rory destroy all his US Open records. You know that will motivate him.

Phil is 41, but his body (particularly his left knee) is much younger than Tiger. If Phil’s head was in the right place, he’d be walking all over this tournament.

    295. Ben Hur?

This is THE Phil Campbell? ;-)

314 – yes the 1959 remake of Ben Hur was better than the original :-)

  • Tim B

    314 Ben Hur?

They tried to remake Gone With The Wind as a musical.

    There’s no accounting for taste

Today Obama and Boehner played golf, with Biden and John Kasich (Ohio gov) on the other side. Good for them.

I just can’t imagine Cameron and MiliE playing golf as a bonding exercise.
There would be any amount of class warfare in the comments.

    That’s sad.

No the table shows the SNP vote in Scotland leading Labour by 39 to 31 with the Tories on 17. This seems OK.

However it also allocates votes to the SNP in other areas of the UK which seems unlikely.

Also BNP vote and possibly Green vote have been double counted with others.

  • http://liberaltaxi.blogspot.com/ corporeal

    313. It’s an odd thought to me, as long as I’ve been aware of golf if Tiger was in a Major you’d almost bet on him against the field every time. And suddenly it seems like he may struggle to win another major at all.

  • fitalass

On the allotment issue, I would put that down in the needs must and catch up category to be honest. Don’t mention that Cameron has been doing that in his Whitby hoose garden for a while now for gods sake!!

Nice idea, but up my way its been amazing to see how many people have gone back to growing their own veg in their own back gardens or where they can over the last few years to cut costs. Its up there with the other new passion, keeping chickens. Been posting about this for a while now. Its really got a real crofter/ or 40′s feel to it.

Been growing my own herbs, now tomatoes and fruit trees. This year adding a range of berry bushes, and next year the kids big climbing frame finally goes to make room for a vegetable patch. And the chickens are coming soon too.

  • http://liberaltaxi.blogspot.com/ corporeal

    320. I know Cameron’s got Scottish connections, I didn’t know it was enough to make him live in a hoose.

  • Tim B

suddenly it seems like he may struggle to win another major at all.

I agree it requires a paradigm shift.

But based on what we know it is a distinct possibility.

  • Tim B

320 And the chickens are coming soon too.

I have a friend who has 6 chickens in urban Newbury, Berkshire.

His biggest problem is urban foxes and he has to secure the hen house every night to protect them.

  • Tim B

    - and with that Goodnight.

    Go Rory!!!!!

  • fitalass

    corporeal @321:

    320. I know Cameron’s got Scottish connections, I didn’t know it was enough to make him live in a hoose.

Corporeal, exactly!! Labour sniffily dismissed the windmills and the huskies, but forgot the home grown veggie plot. Can you imagine Ed Miliband suddenly pushing allotments at PMQ’s? Cameron will just point to the fact that he grows his own veggies already.

  • fitalass

    Tim B @323

Yep, we get bothered by foxes too. But my oldest son’s mate has his own chicken buisness which is doing great. Quite a rare breed, and he is going to help me build a suitable chicken coop that protects them from predators and the harsh weather. His Dad is a Beef farmer, and he is lucky to be okay after recent incident that saw him scarred when they were tagging the calves on the farm. A cow jumped a fence and pinned him to a wall trying to defend her calve. He is going to carry the scars for the rest of his life. Cannot emphasis enough the dangers of entering an area where there is cows with calves.

Nice turn of phrase. Are you an author or something?
